The Android platform is capable of supporting to larger VGA, 2D and 3D graphics library which is based on OpenGL ES 1.0 specifications and traditional smartphone layouts. For data storage purposes, Android supports the database software SQLite. Among the connectivity technologies that Android supports are GSM/EDGE, CDMA, EV-DO, UMTS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Messaging features are also lined up including SMS, MMS and threaded text messaging. Web browsing using Android is catered by the open-source WebKit application framework. Android supports media formats like MP3, MP4, WAV, JPEG, PNG, GIF and BMP.
The following are Android’s additional hardware support: video/still cameras, touchscreens, GPS, accelerometers, magnetometers, accelerated 2D bitblits and accelerated 3D graphics. As for the development environment, it has a tool that supports debugging, memory and performance upgrades, and included a device emulator. Google opened the entire source code under the Apache Licence as a form of Android’s licensing standards. The HTC Dream was the 1st phone to utilize the Android operating system.
